Three Secrets For Being an Organized Mom

If you only take three things from this blog post, let it be the following tips for becoming a more organized mom:

  • Have a family calendar.
  • Make lists.
  • Use a planner.

Becoming an Organized Mom – Getting Started

The first step to becoming an organized mom is to do a brain dump of all your tasks. Write down everything that comes to your mind. Break down larger tasks, such as “clean house” into smaller tasks such as dust, vacuum, wash floors, etc.

Once you have all of your tasks listed out assess and prioritize them. Put the most critical tasks at the top of your list. Are there any tasks that you can completely eliminate? Are there any tasks that you can delegate to someone else? I used the fair play method to divide up tasks with my husband. Figure out which tasks you will truly be responsible for getting done. This step alone can already start to help you feel more organized if you’re able to offload or eliminate some of your responsibilities.

Strategies for Staying an Organized Mom

Now that you know how to get started, let’s dive into some strategies that can help you stay an organized mom. These tips will easily fit into your life, helping you manage your responsibilities without feeling like you are drowning.

1. Use a family calendar.

A family calendar helps keep everyone’s schedules in one place. I use a monthly whiteboard calendar and use a different color for each family member. It’s a lot easier to just check one calendar instead of many!

2. Find a planner you love.

I was never one to use a planner, but in January of this year I wanted to try different tools to help keep me on top of things. I had so many tasks running through my head but didn’t know where to start. My Clever Fox Planner PRO has been tremendously helpful with keeping me organized. There are monthly, weekly, and daily planner pages as well as goal-setting exercises. Go ahead and find a planner that you love too!

3. Assign tasks to each day.

Once you have your planner, assign tasks to each day. This step can really help you feel like an organized mom since you’ll know when you’re going to get your responsibilities done. Assigning tasks to each day also reduces decision fatigue since you have a plan and don’t have to decide each day what you are going to do. I like to fill out my planner for the following week on Fridays.

4. Prioritize your daily tasks.

Each day I prioritize the tasks that I have planned. I do one task at a time and start with the most urgent or important to get done. I find that setting priorities and completing a task from start to finish helps me be more efficient. As a busy mom, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all that I want to get done, but setting priorities helps me focus on what needs my attention the most.

5. Be flexible.

There will be times when things come up – a sick child, a friend in town – and you won’t be able to get to everything you have planned for the day, or even week. It’s important to stay flexible, and not get down on yourself when tasks have to shift. This is easier said than done, especially at first. I still get anxious when I have to move tasks to the following day and wonder if I’ll be able to complete everything I intended for the week. It’s hard when routines have to change! Being flexible and adjusting your plan as needed will help you be a more organized mom in the long run.
