In case you don’t want to scroll through the whole post, you can jump ahead to the costumes that interest you most.
Winnie the Pooh
Our nursery was decorated in the Winnie the Pooh theme, so using Winnie the Pooh as our first family Halloween costume idea was a no-brainer! My daughter was Pooh, my husband was Tigger, and I was Eeyore. These were super comfortable costumes! My husband even had the opportunity to reuse his costume when he had to dress up silly for work.
Costume options:
Sesame Street
My daughter started getting into Sesame Street after she turned 1, so that was our next theme. There are so many costumes to choose from! We settled on Abby Cadabby for my daughter, Cookie Monster for my husband, and Elmo for me. Abby wasn’t on the show when I was a kid but she quickly became one of my favorite characters once I started watching Sesame Street with my daughter. My daughter especially loved her wand! She wasn’t much of a fan of the wings, but luckily they were detachable.

- Cookie Monster
- Elmo (The one I used is no longer available)
General Halloween
2020 was the year that we phoned it in when it came to family Halloween costume ideas. We were in the middle of the covid pandemic, so there wasn’t much going on for Halloween. Plus I was pregnant. We let my daughter choose the Halloween costumes and she wanted my husband to be a pumpkin and me to be a bat and a ghost. She was obsessed with unicorns at the time so that’s what she chose for herself! My husband’s pumpkin costume was a hit! He even reused it last year for the trunk or treat at my daughter’s elementary school and everyone still got a kick out of it.
Costume options:
Beauty and the Beast
2021 was our first Halloween as a family of 4! We went with Beauty and the Beast as our family Halloween costume that year. My older daughter chose Princess Belle as her costume. I originally wanted my baby daughter to be Chip and I would have been Mrs. Potts, but I couldn’t find good options for us at the time, so we went with Princess Belle for her as well. Since I love to read I decided on Belle before she became a princess and my husband was the Beast. We officially entered the Disney Princess stage. My girls’ costumes were so adorable!
Costume options:
Tangled
The next Disney Princess that my older daughter loved was Rapunzel so Tangled was our next family Halloween costume theme. My older daughter was Rapunzel, my younger daughter was Pascal, my husband was Flynn and I was Gothel. I couldn’t find an actual Pascal costume, but did find a more general chameleon costume that was so adorable! My Gothel costume was probably the most comfortable costume I’ve had so far. My daughter still loves to use her Rapunzel costume for fun.
Costume options:
Bluey
Both of my girls became obsessed with Bluey last year! I definitely did not mind since that’s one show that I really enjoy watching with them. Dressing up as the Heely family was a no-brainer! This was probably my favorite of all of our family Halloween costume ideas so far. Both my girls absolutely loved their costumes and they looked so cute. We all know that if our kids are comfortable in their costumes they will have a much more enjoyable time (and have less tantrums!). I decided on just getting Chilli shirt that I could wear again, but I do wish I just bought the full costume.
